Story #26: Big Sister Tiger helps Little Brother Snake carry the weight!
Puli Town (our home), Taiwan, China.
This is going out today at the post office!
Dear Grandaughter Mila,
I don’t have a resident card (cost is $150,000!), so I have to leave Taiwan Province every 90 days. I just got back from Mainland China. It’s just next door, super cheap to go, spend time there and come back, not to mention China is endlessly fascinating, as you will see below.
You were born in 2022. In the Chinese calendar, 2022 is a Year of the Tiger (http://radiosinoland.com/2016/03/03/chinese-lunar-and-agricultural-calendars-explained-a-china-rising-radio-sinoland-cultural-special-edition/). Next month, your baby brother Liam is going to be born. Twenty-twenty-five is Year of the Snake. So, you are a Chinese Tiger and Liam is a Chinese Snake!
While waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay up in Yan’an in Shaanxi Province, I found your enclosed gifts, one for you and one to give to Liam as a welcome-to-the-world gift, along with the baby bracelets I sent you back in April (https://radiosinoland.com/2025/04/10/adventures-in-asia-with-ladyb-and-gonggong-story-21-a-teeny-taste-of-vietnam-after-our-return-home-and-all-about-your-family/).
This one is REALLY cool! It is a stuffed Chinese Tiger, all hand-sown and knitted in a primitive theme. It might be something you could find in Mexico or Sub-Saharan Africa, but no, this style is also popular right here in Northern China.
Isn’t your Chinese Tiger just be-YOU-tuh-ful? All of that stitching is hand-sown.
Where it gets really interesting is Chinese Tigers help Chinese Snakes. Remember, Liam is a Chinese Snake and look who your Tiger carrying on her back. Snakes!
Notice how the Chinese Snakes are straight out of a fantasy animation movie. Maybe Hollywood has been to Northern China. James Cameron went to Zhangjiajie in Hunan Province (Laolao and I traveled there, it’s AMAZING!), as inspiration for his movie Avatar. Who knows?
Do you see another cute little creature that jumped on Tiger’s back? Is that a frog or a beetle or some other cuddly critter? I’m not sure, so you can decide for yourself.
What great symbolism: Big Sister Mila helping Little Brother Liam carry the weight. Big sisters are very important in families. Just ask your Grandmother Maflor, and what do you know – your mother too. She’s Aunt Chara’s big sister.
If your Chinese Tiger gets dirty, I sure wouldn’t put it in the washer. Try using a clean sponge with some tap water to brush her off.
When Liam is born, I am also adding a Chinese Green Snake, which you can give as a birth gift. They bring good luck. Like where you live, green snakes are harmless and help the environment. Put it beside his bed. Chinese Green Snakes bring double good luck during Years of the Snake.
Lastly, I know how much you love reading books. I met the Yan’an artist, Ms. Gao Zhiqin, who hand cut this Chinese Tiger bookmark. Hard to believe she created it with a small pair of scissors. She has been on national Chinese TV. I saw her cut a butterfly. Took her about five minutes. Really impressive. Even more interesting, she was teaching her six-year-old grandson paper cutting, handing down the craft to the next generation. Chinese paper cutting is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, going back to 400AD. That’s 1,600 years ago, and the people here keep it going. It’s a timeless and lovely handicraft.
Love from Puli Town,
LadyB, Laolao and Gonggong
LadyB is looking for you over the Taiwan Mountains, across the Pacific Ocean and over the Rocky Mountains… WHEW!
