Well, this is the famous Five Finger Peaks. I actually count about eight. You can decide for yourself. And there’s this magnificent – I’ll zoom in – there’s this magnificent waterfall that’s actually quite big. It’s hard looking at it through the camera, which doesn’t really do it any justice.

But, the communists actually got up there and used it as a lookout, because it’s the highest place in the entire area. That way, they were really able to do reconnaissance and see the movement of the fascist KMT, Chiang Kai-Shek’s troops. It’s really spectacular and you can see just how wild and foreboding these mountains are. I mean, can you imagine trying to navigate through all this? It’s really unbelievable.

This is just right outside of Jinggangshan and we’re now leaving to go further east into Jiangxi.

This is the terrain where the communists built their first revolutionary base up in the mountains. And these are several hundred meters tall. Chiang Kai-Shek tried five times to encircle them, and they could never catch them. You can imagine what it must have been like trying to climb up there, with the communists knowing the terrain very, very well.

When the moment was opportune, the communists would come down from the mountains into villages, like off to the right, and pay for food. They had very strict rules about paying for everything that they took from the citizens, which is why they loved them, because Chiang Kai-Shek, just ripped off, burned, raped, killed and stole everything. So here we are.

So here we are in this several hundred meter tunnel. We’re about halfway and there’s this huge group of people who are singing revolutionary songs, as they walk through it. Really interesting. I’ve never been asked to walk through such a long tunnel. It goes here and then that’s the other end. I’ve never been asked to walk through such a long, dark tunnel.

So, they’re having a good time being patriotic, loving their country and loving the Chinese revolution. And as much as the as much as westerners hate to admit it, loving communism and socialism.

#1-This is Zhufeng Tunnel which is for cars, but the other end is locked with only a door for people to walk through. To my back is Five Finger Peaks. #2-After a hundred meters or so, with only light at each end of the tunnel, it got a little disorienting while walking.

#4-When we lived in China 1990-1997, I remember well this image of Five Finger Peaks on the 100 yuan bill. When we came back 2010-2019, physical cash was rapidly disappearing, as the people adapted well, as the people got used to paying with their telephones.
