Show Host Daniel Aria: Iran is forging closer ties to become a stronger member of the SCO and is drawing nearer to Beijing. The ramifications of this shift are, cliché as it may sound, reshaping the global order—essentially, a new world order in the making.
Jeff J. Brown: I think that in five years—or maybe even three—people will look back on the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting in Tianjin as one of the most pivotal moments in global geopolitics. It’s become increasingly clear: the SCO is the anti-NATO, and BRICS is the anti-G7. These nations have drawn a line in the sand against Western imperialism, signaling they won’t tolerate the constant bullying the West imposes around the world—on countries like Iran, among many others.
So, I think what happened is absolutely tremendous. And I believe President Pezeshkian did an outstanding job representing Iran—he stood tall and spoke with conviction.
Daniel: And, Brown, when it comes to U.S. global actions, perhaps what’s hurting America most these days isn’t how it treats its adversaries, but how it treats its allies—particularly its European partners and others around the world. When you step back and see how U.S. hegemony has really gone to its head, you begin to understand why organizations like the SCO and BRICS have grown so rapidly—and why that growth will continue, possibly giving rise to even more similar alliances.
Jeff: Well, I’m actually half American, half French, so I’ve got a personal stake in Europe’s future. And frankly, Europe is now completely irrelevant. It’s almost pathetic to watch—European nations have become little more than obedient shoeshine boys and girls of Washington and NATO, marching in lockstep no matter the cost.
Meanwhile, the Global Majority—the Global South—now has what it needs: BRICS, the SCO, and growing institutional strength. I believe that, over time, Russia-led organizations like the CSTO and the Eurasian Economic Union will eventually integrate with BRICS and the SCO. What we’re seeing isn’t just political—it’s like a tectonic shift, but on a global scale.
Just look at the past two days: 20 presidents and prime ministers gathered in Tianjin. President Pezeshkian is staying over for the big National Day parade in Beijing tomorrow. He’ll be standing alongside President Xi Jinping and President Vladimir Putin on the dais.
It’s as if the world has split into two realities. In one, 80 to 85 percent of the world’s population—nations from Africa, Asia, Latin America—is aligning with the SCO and BRICS. In the other, you have what Putin calls the “golden billion”—roughly 15% of the planet, mostly the West, plus Japan and South Korea.
And the gap between these two blocs is widening—fast. I believe we saw a massive leap forward in that shift just yesterday and the day before.
Daniel: Jeff, before you go—do you think U.S. leadership simply doesn’t see the impact or potential threat posed by these tectonic shifts in the global order? Or if they do see it, why aren’t they doing more to respond?
Jeff: It’s not that they don’t see it—it’s that they can’t think differently. There’s a quote from the former UN Secretary-General from Egypt—what was his name? In his memoir, The Dance of the Lions and the Bulls, he wrote something that really stuck with me. He said: “Empire does not do negotiations. Empire does not practice diplomacy. Empires—from Rome onward—impose their will on others. They dictate the terms, take what they want, and don’t care about the consequences for the people affected. There’s no win-win. It’s all zero-sum: we win, you lose. And if they lose, we come back and take even more.”
That’s the mindset. And I don’t think the U.S. leadership can operate any other way. They’re acting like an empire, and empires think and behave in imperial terms. That’s the reality.
Daniel: Boutros Boutros-Ghali—he served in the early 1990s, if I’m not mistaken. Yes, that’s right.
