Fantabulous China Writer thread, February 2026

By Frans Vandenbosch @ https://yellowlion.org/

In this photo: Zhou Enlai, Mao Zedong and Zhu De during the Seventh National Congress of the Communist Party of China, held in Yan’an in 1945.

Look at Mao Zedong and the others.

This was in Yan’an, far away from the capital, a couple of months before the retreat of the Japanese and 4 years before the Amethyst incident on the UK and the victory over the KMT.

These 3 people were confident that they were victorious.
They had a sound strategy.
They knew that they had the support of the people.

Then, we, the China Writers’ Group
– are we confident ?
– do we know that we will be victorious ?
– do we have a strategy ?
– do we have a plan when we will take over Brussels and Washington ?

As fate would have it, these three most important heads of the CPC and the Chinese nation died in the same year, 1976, the Year of the Dragon. It appeared the Gang of Four would take complete control of the party and the government, and no one was capable of stopping them. Mao’s successor, Hua Guofeng, was a nobody with no real power. Success was never guaranteed. As we all should understand by now, “Dying is easy; revolution is hard.” China’s fate would be changed by someone who had protected the lives of Sun Yat-sen (he was Dr. Sun’s personal guard), Mao Zedong (warned him of a military coup), Chiang Kai-shek (negotiating for his release after Xi’an Incident), saved the CPC twice, once during the Long March and again after Mao’s passing, revived and elevated Deng Xiaoping’s leadership role at age seventy-two, protected an old revolutionary by the name of Xi (by his appointment as the Head of Guangdong Province) and groomed Xi’s son (this unsung hero’s son was the secretive leader of the princelings) to one day lead the nation to the promised land. Mao was influential, but the party lives on and flourishes because of many people.

Let’s address this from the encompassing Body-Mind-Soul perspective including Universal History.

■ The Sovereign Nations are acting in the right direction of Universal History.

From the Universal History Mystique and Logos of *Might serving Right* the Sovereigns are serving Justice and are necessarily by Natural Laws favored by Destiny, by Beauty, Goodness and Truth.

■ The 3 major Sovereign Civilizational States — China, Russia, Iran — relentlessly acting for restoring Justice on Earth for everyone, are all three endowed with their respective open Devoted Aristocratic Oligarchies (oDAO), absolutely essential ingredient for Sovereignty because they have THE much needed EPISTEMOLOGICALLY ADVANCED PEOPLE endowed not only with BRAINS but also with COJONES, HEARTS and SPINES.

We all know that the slaves and the house niggers are in general NOT devoid of brains but abysmally lack cojones, hearts and spines as a rule.

■ On the FACTUAL REALITY level, the Sovereigns have the needed TOOLS OF POWER for speaking THE LANGUAGE OF STRENGTH to the Black King the Kakistocratic Kabbalistic Kleptomaniac KKK Pax Judaica & to the evil Bkack Queen the KFC-AZAEL, the Kakistocratic Feudal Conglomerate of the Anglo-Zio-American EstabLishment.

The KKK Pax Judaica & the KFC-AZAEL are composed by epistemologically inferior people, meaning, among many other things, that they only understand the Language of Strength.

Under them are their 2 main operational bases & the minions of the 2 main operational bases (all of them sources of revenues and of cannon fodder for the KKK Pax Judaica & the KFC-AZAEL) : Israhell & the Uncouth Slaves of AIPAC/USA.

■ THE LANGUAGE OF STRENGTH is not only military power.

The comprehensive Language of Strength is T.E.A.M. :

  • •• Techno-scientific achievements
  • •• Epistemologically advanced people
  • •• Assets : physical, institutional, networks
  • •• Military power & economy

■ Let’s all of us be utterly grateful that we are living during one of the most dazzling nexus of Universal History that will witness the most radical global changes since the last 250 years.

THE WHIRLWIND WILL CERTAINLY COME BUT AFTER IT, THE NEW GLOBAL REALITY, much healthier alternative replacing the evil New World Order, WILL BE DAZZLINGLY BORN.

And we’ll all see it and live it.

Most Chinese elites would agree that Mao was very important for China. On the other hand, most common Chinese people would argue that Mao was indispensable both in the victory of the Chinese Revolution and the founding of the PRC.  Most Chinese elite argue that Mao made terrible mistakes during the Cultural Revolution. But most Chinese common people cherished the accomplishments of the cultural revolution when there was no official corruption, no crime, no drugs and no prostitutes throughout Chinese society, when officials had to work with farmers and workers on a regular basis.  In 1955, Chinese Government gave ten people the Rank of Marshal, ten people the rank of Da Jiang (four star General), 57 people Shang Jiang (three star general) 177 people Zhong Jiang (two star general) and 1360 people the rank of Shao Jiang (one star general), a total of 1,616 people. None of these people were found to be corrupt.  That was in itself an impossible accomplishment.

There is an old saying in China, the administration of a state is mostly the administration of the officials. Official corruption has plagued the Chinese state and society throughout its entire history. The Mao Era is an exception.

Before Mao died, Mao never appointed Hua Guofeng to be his successor.  There was no historical record that Mao ever met with Hua Guofeng once on a one-to-one basis.  Mao did meet Hua Guofeng on a few occasions after April 6, 1975 when Hua Guofeng accompanied foreign dignitaries to see Chairman Mao.  Mao dismissed Deng Xiaoping after the Tiananmen Square Incident on April 5, 1975, and Hua Guofeng was appointed acting premier then.

Yao Wenyuan, one of the Gang of Four, left a memoir which was circulated on the internet.  In that memoir, Yao Wenyuan claimed that in July 1976, the political bureau discussed personnel arrangements with Chairman Mao without a definitive decision.  Hua Guofeng or Zhang Chunqiao would be premier, Jiang Qing would be the Party Chairman, Wang Hongwen would be head of the People’s Congress and so on. And before the party was able to finalize its personnel arrangements, Mao died.  This left a tremendous, tantalizing moment for some people to seize national power.

According to Shi Dongbin, who claimed that he interviewed Hua Guofeng and wrote the famous book: Duanzan de Chunqiu (A Brief Dynasty). In the book, Shi Dongbin claimed that it was Wang Dongxing who suggested to Hua Guofeng to arrest the Gang of Four.  He argued that if he did not take action right away, Jiang Qing would not allow him to serve as premier.  Hua Guofeng rejected the idea the first time.  But he agreed to do it when Wang Dongxing pressed him to do it the second time.  Hua Guofeng did not have any differences with the Gang of Four.  But Wang Dongxing could not tolerate the Gang of Four.  The Gang of Four knew it, and Mao knew it, and Wang Dongxing knew it as well.

In reality, there was a coup in the Chinese Government after Mao died.  It was the first time in the history of the Chinese Communist Party to arrest the top leaders like that.

Hua Guofeng and Wang Dongxing both resisted the coming back of Deng Xiaoping for two years.  But in the end, they were no match for Deng Xiaoping’s scheming and maneuvering.  Wang Dongxing resigned first with six political bureau members in less than two years.  Hua Guofeng had to resign one year later.  Deng Xiaoping and Chen Yun, along with those who were dismissed by Mao during the Cultural Revolution years returned to power in China.

Let us see what happened in China after that.  First move by Deng Xiaoping: All the Communist officials who joined the revolution before the founding of the PRC were given special treatment: one or two raises in salary, unlimited medical care expenses which accounted for about 80 percent of the total medical care expenses in China.  Some high officials would occupy ICU rooms reserved for high officials for years. Thirteen months’ salary for those who joined the revolution after 1945 and before Oct 1, 1949, 14 months salaries for those who joined the revolution before 1945, and 15 months’ salary for those who joined the revolution before 1937. The government would pay for a nanny to take care of them.  One tour a year to a location of their choice with their family at the government expenses.  Every local government set up a special government department to take care of these old officials. On top of that, the children of these officials were appointed to important positions of the government before they retired.  It literally turned China into a feudal system.  That is why the Tiananmen Square demonstrations took place in China in 1989.  Inflation ran wild.  The price of consumer goods went up ten times, one hundred times overnight. In 1984, China printed more money than the previous thirty-five years.  People thought the old inflation of Jiang Jieshi’s (Chiang Kai-Shek) time was coming back.  My mother bought two hundred feet of white cloth, and one of her neighbors got four hundred pounds of salt.  Another neighbor bought twenty black and white TV sets.  My parents saved two thousand yuan over thirty years and were wiped out overnight in 1984.

Crimes increased ten times and twenty times from 1976 to 1983, and the number of policemen went up ten times.  Bandits who completely disappeared during the Mao era returned with a vengeance.  I traveled on the bus in Henan Province during the 1980s and 1990s. Once the bus left the urban areas, the bandits would take out a knife and force the passengers to give them money.  They would threaten to throw the people out of the window if they refuse to comply.  In September 1983, Deng Xiaoping ordered severe punishment of crimes and criminals. Cities and counties were given quotas to execute and imprison criminals.  More than two hundred thousand people were executed, and close to one million were sentenced to prison in a matter of a few weeks in complete disregard of the law. He did that three times before he died in 1997.

During the Mao era, Chinese farmers did not pay land tax individually.  It was the collective that paid a land tax of ten jin (1 jin = 500g of grain) per Chinese acre. After Deng Xiaoping disbanded the collective, individual farmers had to pay the land taxes.  Village and local officials added what they wanted to add to the land taxes, which was one form of corruption, which plagued China throughout its history.  When I was doing research in the Chinese countryside, I found the land taxes in Henan, Anhui, had reached 200 jin per Chinese acre by 1990, twenty times of the Mao Era.  That was one reason why there were more than one hundred thousand protests by farmers against the Chinese local government in the 1990s.

During the Mao era, the Chinese Government did a wonderful job in controlling population growth, by educating the Chinese people to marry late and have only two children.  But after the disbanding of the collectives, the Chinese farmers no longer trusted the Government.  They thought the government was not reliable anymore.  They needed to have more children to take care of their old age.  At the time, Chinese farmers did not have a retirement arrangement with the government.  They relied on the collective for their old age. They relied on the collective for their children’s education and medical care.  When the collectives were disbanded, farmers had nothing but their own children for old age security.

Deng Xiaoping cut the national spending on rural areas from 15 percent to 3 percent after he came back to power.

Deng Xiaoping’s answer to the population growth was one child policy, forcing farmers to have only one child.  If you refuse to comply, it will first cut off water and electricity, then dismantle your house.  Village and local officials would come to farmers’ houses at midnight and drag pregnant women to the hospital to operate on them.  It was like hell at that time.  I saw it with my own eyes.  Farmers said that Deng Xiaoping’s Communist Party was no different from Jiang Jieshi’s Nationalist Party (KMT).

Four hundred million babies were aborted as a result of one child policy. Today, the problem that young people in China refuse to marry and have children dates back to Deng Xiaoping.

Also under Deng Xiaoping, more than forty million workers of state-owned enterprises lost their jobs and benefits overnight.

Housing was privatized, medical care and education commercialized.

Official corruption became rampant. I have interviewed hundreds of Chinese officials.  Even these officials themselves admitted that they would have been shot ten times if it was during the Mao era.

Without Xi Jinping’s efforts to curb Chinese official corruption, it is doubtful if the Chinese Government would have been able to survive.

The price for corruption is very high. Each year, millions of different level officials are arrested, persecuted and end up in prison.

Xi Jinping had arrested three vice Chairmans of the national military commission and a few dozen high officers.  It is a dangerous game.  I would argue that anything can happen when the military establishment is no longer stable.  All this was started by Deng Xiaoping and his policies. He poisoned Chinese political culture, a culture that serves the people and is trusted by the people, cultivated by Mao during the Cultural Revolution years.

China is a big country with a very complicated political culture.  When we talk about Chinese politics and Chinese history, we cannot talk about it in general.  For example, most Chinese elites hated the Cultural Revolution and the Gang of four.  They hated Mao as well, because they suffered during the Mao era, but they dared not to say it.  But I never met a Chinese farmer or worker who hated the Cultural Revolution or Gang of four.  They love Mao so much. Many of them now are openly talking that they would give up their own life to bring Mao back to Chinese society.

In a class society, we cannot talk about politics without discussing class issues. Class struggle is real and is a life and death issue.

In the struggle between Mao and Deng, or we can say it was between socialism and capitalism, Mao has won, and socialism has won in China. In the long run, Mao will win, and socialism will win.

Joseph Schupter, the famous Harvard Professor of economics, wrote in his classic Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy, that if you asked me if capitalism will die, I will tell you without any hesitation, it will.  If you ask me if socialism wins in the end, I will tell you without any hesitation it will, despite its problems.

I have already seen enough in China and in the U.S. to feel that capitalism is in its last breath.

Dongping,

What an impressive essay. I’m overwhelmed.
Your practical, everyday examples, facts and figures, are actually confirming what I have learned in my conversations with many Chinese people. They often didn’t express it so clearly, but I could feel what they meant. And it wonderfully aligns with what you wrote.

Thank you so much. You have put together my puzzle. 非常感谢 !

Thanks Dongping for such a comprehensive reply. I’ll keep it for future reference.

What’s important for me is that Mao Zedong absolutely made the Chinese people remember who they are, the Chinese people is made of the elites AND of the general population.

From there, everything became possible.

As you know, the fences separating the elites from the general population are not as tight in China compared to the neo-colonial West.

What has absolutely distinguished China from feudal Europe and from the colonial West is real meritocracy. Anyone from the general population can potentially join the elites.

Even if I limit myself to serious studies of what has been achieved in China between 1900 to now, it would fill rooms and rooms.

A great man necessarily dies one day and what he leaves is a myth, an image, a role model, a longing, an ideal but on a more impactful way, A RUPTURE FROM THE PAST, A NEW DEPARTURE BUT HAVING KEPT EVERYTHING VALUABLE, INTEMPORAL FROM THE PAST MEANING REJUVENATED (Before him and After him so to speak) …

… ALSO at a more down to earth dimension, new tools of power, new institutions, the renewed self-confidence and dynamism of the general population, new elites created around him, old elites re-integrated, multiple overtures to the future, a political legacy having very clear cut goals to be achieved which is more or less modified, more or less betrayed, more or less adapted to new or unexpected circumstances.

THE 110 YEARS OF ABSENCE (1839-1949) during which China did not play a major international role show to what extent the Chinese needed to BE BACK TO THEMSELVES FIRST and then play their much needed global roles.

Well, the Chinese are back to themselves and are playing their part on the global stage.

The future is fully open but I’m sure of one thing : China will shape it together with many other nations, and China’s presence will uplift the whole World from the global nightmare sadly still operating fully in certain regions of the Planet and to a certain extent in other regions; the aforementioned global nightmare made essentially by the Kakistocratic Feudal Conglomerate of the Anglo-Zio-American EstabLishment (KFC-AZAEL) mostly in the last 250 years.

THE WHIRLWIND WILL CERTAINLY COME FOR ABSOLUTELY DESTROYING THE UTTERLY OBSOLETE KFC-AZAEL COLONIAL, NEO-COLONIAL ORDER and THE NEW GLOBAL REALITY WILL DAZZLINGLY BE BORN.

Let’s rejoice to be alive right now.

I concur with Frans, though I would like to have solid evidence to support some of the claims such as 80% of medical expenditure on the party an army officials, cutting 15% to 3% expenditure on the rural sector and Jiang Qing be the chairperson of the CPC.  I think Mao should know that Jiang was not a popular person among the elite and that she did not have much personal contribution to be worthy of that position.

By Godfree Roberts @ https://www.herecomeschina.com/

Peter,

May I use your letter as a guest blog post? Would you like to elaborate on it?

Incidentally, China did not become a closed agrarian society because of Mao. In 1943, Mao told John Service: “China must industrialize. This can be done—in China— only by free enterprise and with the aid of foreign capital. Chinese and American interests are correlated and similar. They fit together, economically and politically. We can and must work together. The United States would find us more cooperative than the Kuomintang. We will not be afraid of democratic American influence—we will welcome it. We have no silly ideas of taking only Western mechanical techniques. Also we will not be interested in monopolistic, bureaucratic capitalism that stifles the economic development of the country and only enriches the officials. We will be interested in the most rapid possible development of the country on constructive and productive lines. First will be the raising of the living standard of the people… we will be interested in the welfare of the Chinese people.

This wasn’t just misdirection or posturing for a diplomat; even in internal CCP memos, China’s policy was clear: Under conditions of observance of the principle of mutual advantage, we welcome international capital investments and technical cooperation. [Mao wrote Presidents Truman and Eisenhower with the same plea; all ignored him].

By Peter Man

Hi Godfree,

By all means.

You might mention the title of my book, Unconquered, reflects what I think about China. It’s not a frivolous opinion. I presented historical evidence. Here is my website:

https://www.petermanauthor.com/

I learned from Sidney Rittenberg that he had passed two letters from Mao to the Americans, but nothing came of it. No one knows the real story, but here is my take. Upon the end of the Second World War, Stalin signed a friendship treaty with Chiang Kai-Shek’s government. Stalin likely did not believe the CPC would succeed, given that Chiang’s almost four-million-man army was well-armed and well-trained by the Americans, and Mao had a peasant militia wielding spears and the few guns they had captured. This friendship agreement was not a game. Chiang had to accept Mongolia’s independence. How would you feel if you were the CPC leadership? As Oscar Wilde said, “Friends stab you in the front.”

I’m convinced those letters from Mao soliciting American friendship had not received prior permission from Big Brother Stalin. If I were the Americans, I would judiciously leak the letters to our friend in Moscow to foment internal discord. Americans are damn good at this kind of betrayal. Trust your enemy and get stabbed in the back. You deserve it.

With the Korean War, the Seventh Fleet defending Chiang in Taiwan and McCarthyism, U.S.-China rapprochement became impossible. And China under Mao went its own way, as if the Americans had never come.

While Nixon visited China in 1972, the U.S. did not establish diplomatic relations with China until January 1, 1979. Since Americans don’t do anything unprofitable, the decision was not altruistic, such as helping China become democratic. Dear Lord Almighty! Though the Cultural Revolution was over, no one assumed China would let in the demons and dance with the devil. As I mentioned, it was a dangerous game to play. One false step and you go to hell.

In any case, politics and history are complicated. We know a lot less than what we don’t know. A person’s experience can only be a small part of it. Woe to us who believe it’s the eternal truth. I have too many stories to tell, and I despaired in the beginning, wondering how China could pull itself up by its bootstraps. The problems seemed deep-rooted and insurmountable. Luckily, we do have stubborn facts to guide us, and we can see with our own eyes and experience physically what China has accomplished. From this, I realize that most of us do not understand the work and sacrifice of a small number of people who never gave up and will never give up their goal to rejuvenate China and serve the Chinese people, including those who vilify the CPC while benefiting from it. I’m comforted to know they are working behind the curtain of noise unseen, unsung and unhonoured. Dying is easy; revolution is hard. Most of us don’t qualify even if we want to try.

In 1997, when I stepped inside Shenzhen, I thought I had entered the Wild West. I described my experience in earlier posts. Child beggars, pimps, whores, scammers, thieves, pickpockets and gangsters were everywhere. Almost every official I was acquainted with spent their evenings in karaokes collecting stuffed envelopes, molesting young girls and drinking themselves to a stupor. Exceptions were few and far between. And the West said China was a repressive police state. From that point on, I would not believe anything the Western media and politicians say. One of my first projects in China was building a new digital studio for the Changsha television station. I discovered that all high-tech equipment had to be shipped to China by extraordinary means. China couldn’t even produce standard cables. We had to import almost 100% of what we needed, including cables and connectors. At the time, China’s development was dependent on the West and had to follow the West’s rules.

As I said earlier, I went to Shenzhen with a Canadian friend. He never returned. I could have just as easily judged China as a hopelessly corrupt, uncultured and incapable country. It would be easy to judge because I was a well-educated Canadian. China needed people like me to help build its infrastructure and educate its officials. This kind of corruption comes with the territory. It was not specific to China but was common to all developing countries needing input from more advanced countries. It happened in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan when they were developing into Asian dragons. I heard lots of stories from people who did business in those countries during that era. Young women exchanged something they had to bring money to their impoverished villages.

It is easy to say Deng Xiaoping corrupted China. I know many people who thought it and said it, including my father-in-law. He thought black cat-white cat meant one needn’t have principles. China did not become what it is today by keeping Mao’s closed agrarian society and letting the peasants take charge. I realized it was a very dangerous game to play. The company I worked for has been established in China since 1981. I realized that it was not easy for China to get advanced equipment to build its infrastructure for development. Let’s say they needed a power turbine to generate electricity. They needed to buy it from ABB, which wanted payment in USD. China had none. What would you do? You borrow from Big Daddy, and you do what Big Daddy says. Hence, China borrowed money to develop local economies, but the condition was for the central government to relinquish power to the local governments to handle the money. And this is how local officials handling projects got corrupted. If you’re in charge of the tap, it’s hard not to get wet.

Big Daddy also says, your RMB exchange rate of 1.5 yuan to a dollar is ridiculous. The black market is at least four times that, if not more. I know, I was in China in 1981. If China were to be the manufacturer for American companies, the exchange rate should be somewhere around 8.5 yuan to a dollar. The trajectory took about 15 years, but the depreciation of the RMB was relentless, causing inexorable inflation. When teachers’ salaries could not rise in step, while merchants and high officials could do well, the students protested and clamoured for the return of the good old days (BDE, Before the Deng Era). Then, regime-change operatives landed in Beijing and almost did the party in (I didn’t make this up; it’s now well documented). So, dying is easy; revolution is hard. To develop, you need the devil’s technology and money, and you need to do the devil’s bidding. Make a wrong step, and you’ll end up like Russia in the early 1990s

By the time China joined the WTO, the exchange rate had been around 8.3 yuan to a dollar for several years. Later, Big Daddy wanted to reduce the trade imbalance, and the RMB went from 8.3 yuan in 2005 to below 6 yuan over about two years. The appreciation was relentless, as Big Daddy wished. Blame Deng, I suppose.

When Xi Jinping came to power in 2013, I noticed something different. It was not only because of him but because China was ready. Hu Jintao wanted to achieve something, but was hampered. It took more than ten years, but China has become what it is today as a result of the work under Xi (AXE; After the Xi Era). I know the difference. I lived through it.

We may all have different personal experiences and opinions, but facts are stubborn things, from which we can seek truth. China cannot be what it is today without Deng. Playing this dangerous game with the devil, China and the CPC have survived and are on the road to full rejuvenation. While history is not coming to an end, the concern is now more about continuity and defending the future from human malfeasance. Humans are flawed, and as long as humans are in charge, the mistakes of the West are likely to be repeated. We need to understand the goal of the revolution and how to keep the fruits from going bad.
