Happy New Year Lantern Festival 2026
Hello, Radio Sinoland fans,
Something to celebrate with all the doom and gloom in the Judeo-West and what they’re doing in West Asia, which is reprehensible.
Let’s have fun today. Today is Lantern Festival. It’s the fifteenth day of the New Year. It’s because the New Year starts at the New Moon, and fifteen days later, it’s the Full Moon.
The celebration includes lighting lanterns, to represent the Moon, after fifteen days of eating, drinking with family and friends. Chinese traditionally serve a sweet dish that you see pictured in these various little posters. It’s basically a sweet dumpling in a light sugar syrup, served warm. Again, round and white, they represent the Full Moon.
They can be wheat or rice to make the spongy dumpling. They can be plain or with a sweet filling, like red bean or sesame paste, ground nuts, egg yolk and whatnot.
In the background of this first poster, of which there are thousands to find across Chinese internet, it has the blooms of a cherry or plum tree, because the weather is starting to get warmer, leaves are starting to come out, blossoms are starting to bud. In fact, Taiwan Province this time of year has many cherry blossom festivals that are heavily attended. Same activity in Japan, where cherry trees are world famous. We will be going to one this week.
Also, for many parts of China, like where Evelyne and I live, the dry season is ending. In fact, today, starting last night, we’ve had sixteen hours of almost nonstop rain, so that’ll really help push the cherry blossoms to come out in full force. We get TWO METERS of rain a year, so when it falls out of the sky, it’s like a deluge! Rainfall here never ceases to amaze us. It’s like a giant waterfall. Luckily, it cools things off for a few hours thereafter.
The above: again more lantern globes, fireworks and dumplings, with beautiful calligraphy. This one is time limited, since it includes the date. Chinese calendar images and cards that don’t have dates are what I call “perpetual”, since they can be used year after year. Evelyne and I always keep a small stash of perpetual cards, as they come in handy.
The above has a celestial motif, with clouds on the bowl and two more added in gold. This cloud motif is seen everywhere in temples and artwork, going back millennia. To reinforce the heavenly, the Chinese script reminds you to stargaze in the beautiful night sky. Of course, for thousands of years, red and yellow/gold have been the colors of emperors, art and since 1949, the national flag.
For a change of pace, food coloring can be added to the dumpling dough, for a rainbow effect. This poster ties it all in: peonies (China’s national flower) blooming on the bowl and in the background, a bright, round lantern and the Full Moon hanging in the sky.
