My comments

Having lived in Taiwan now coming on two years, it is really easy to be fooled by how it looks, especially for those who have experience on the Mainland, where everything is new, spiffy, modern, ultra up-to-date.

There’s a reason for this.

Taiwan built out its infrastructure, industry and technology from the 1950s until the 1980s. So, when you’re driving around Taiwan, it looks old school, it looks like the 20th century. But they spend billions of dollar equivalents every year maintaining the roads, the infrastructure, the bridges, the electricity, the water, etc. Therefore, in fact, it’s so well maintained that it’s just as good as what the Mainland has.

The Mainland has, of course, a lot more high-speed trains and a lot more ports because it’s the equivalent of 34 Taiwans. However, Taiwan has an excellent high-speed train system along its west coast, where 95% of the people live. The roads are world-class.

Their logistics and supply chains on the Island are just as good as they are on the Mainland. Now, these same supply chains and logistics are integrated with the Mainland, which makes them even more efficient for industry, manufacturing and technology.

TSMC, which was incidentally started by a Mainlander, Morris Chang, dominates global chip production, while Nvidia is the flagship for microchips in the United States. Yet, Nvidia can’t build high-end microchips very well in the United States, because they don’t have the skilled people to man the plants. This is true for Intel, AMD, Micron, Broadcom and Texas Instruments. Much of their high-end production is in Taiwan and on the Mainland.

Morris Chang concurs. In the early 1980s, while still at Texas Instruments, Chang witnessed TI’s factory in Japan achieving twice the chip production yield as TI’s factory in Texas.[21] Observing that the staff and technicians in Japan were better qualified and had lower turnover, and failing to recruit the same caliber of staff in the United States, he concluded that the future of advanced manufacturing appeared to be in Asia.[21]

That’s why Nvidia, America’s largest chip maker has increased its investment on Taiwan Island by ten times, in the last five years! Taiwanese are well-trained, they go to trade schools, they’re literate, hard working  and they have the skills needed for chip manufacturing. This is true all the way down to assembling machinery, machinists, small manufacturing, medium-sized manufacturing, large manufacturing, steel production, car manufacturing, you name it. This island is coast-to-coast factories.

Taiwan Island does it just like the Mainland does, but on a much smaller scale, of course looking 20th century instead of 21st century.

Below, China Writer Wei Ling Chua explains why Nvidia is going humongo in Taiwan. For chip makers, it and the Mainland are the places to be.

Thanks to my good friend and comrade, China Writer Wei Ling Chua (https://www.amazon.com/stores/Wei-Ling-Chua/author/B00G3SWQZ0) for finding this report and making some great comments!

NVIDIA to invest up to $150 billion a year in Taiwan

Trump policy failed miserably as he failed to address and invest in the basic foundation for re industrialized America to facilitate manufacturing competitiveness. For examples:
1) failure in investing in improving and modernised aging infrastructures such as roads, rails, ports, energy, water, airports, internet speed etc;
2) failure in putting money in education to upgrade the quality, skills and knowledge of the workforce to facilitate re industrialization;
3) failure to tackle corruption, cut militarily expenditure etc and channel the money to reduce debt to save the dollars as reserve currency;
4) failure to tackle corporate greed and unsustainable high cost of living that effectively killing middle class across America. That is killing domestic consumer’s market, one of the major pillars of US economy;
5) failure to tackle lost of US reputation to the international communities, and generate policy to rebuild Trust and reliability
So, now even NVIDIA is putting more money elsewhere:

Nvidia plans to increase its annual spending in Taiwan to approximately \(\$150\) billion, up from current levels of around \(\$100\) billion. CEO Jensen Huang announced this immense financial commitment to anchor the island’s position as the global “epicenter” of the AI revolution and power the broader hardware supply chain. [123]
Key Details of the Investment:
  • The Spending Shift: Just four to five years ago, Nvidia’s annual outlay in Taiwan was roughly \(\$10\) billion to \(\$15\) billion. The surge to \(\$150\) billion represents a massive scale-up of funding for co-engineering, chip production, advanced packaging, and AI supercomputer infrastructure.
  • New Taipei Headquarters: To anchor these investments, Nvidia is building a massive new regional campus in northern Taipei’s Beitou-Shilin Technology Park called “Constellation”. The facility is slated to break ground this year and become fully operational by 2030, with enough space to accommodate around 4,000 employees.
  • Supply Chain Consolidation: The multi-billion dollar outlay deepens the company’s reliance on and integration with critical manufacturing partners. Nvidia relies almost entirely on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to fabricate its highly complex processing wafers. It also closely coordinates with Taiwanese assemblers and component manufacturers like Foxconn, Quanta Computer, and Wistron to produce finished AI servers and data center infrastructure.
  • Industry Context: The spending injection follows an explosive period for the company, which recently reported record-breaking quarterly revenues of \(\$81.6\) billion. It also coincides with a similar aggressive push by competitor AMD, which recently announced its own \(\$10\) billion investment into Taiwan’s AI infrastructure. [12345789]
