#1: these are the mountains where the communists established their first soviets, or independent communities
Transcript
These are the mountains of Eastern Hunan and Jiangxi province. We’re right on the border here in Jiangxi. These are the mountains where the communist started their revolutionary bases. The fascist KMT tried four times to kill them off, even calling them an extermination program, but it didn’t work. And, then finally, the fifth time, Chiang Kai-Shek and the KMT built block houses, so they connected to each other. And with 1,000,000 men against about 110,000 communists, they were able to finally evict them, and they managed to escape.
So, they were not exterminated. They managed to escape. Of course, they came down, slipped away and started the Long March up to Yan’an in Shaanxi province, where we are going to go in about ten days.
It’s really spectacular.
#2: young Chinese are searching their revolutionary roots by going on Red Tours

So, you can see this is Yunnan Normal University, all of these student groups learning about Chinese history, the revolution, the civil war, the struggles, and we’re a long way from home. We’re way out in the countryside. And now here’s the University of Yunnan. Now this is the University of Kunming Communication. Just one group after another.
3-More students learning about the amazing sacrifices and martyrdom that the Chinese people endured to gain their freedom and independence from the Japanese and Judeo-West.
Transcript
So, here are groups of students on summer vacation, and they’ve got their shirts on and their military bags, like from the revolutionary times, in front of the monument for the Hengyangjie Battle that the communist won against the Japanese. They are hamming it up. They’re enjoying themselves. Of course, another famous saying from Mao Zedong on the front of the monument and then behind it is an inscription from Zhu De, the great marshal, who was one of the greatest military minds of the twentieth century.
#4: this one got cut off, but it shows students acting out Mao Zedong and Zhu De on this trail to deliver food to the Red Army

#3: we were in a sea of hundreds of students doing their own Red Tours. The red pin on the young woman’s shirt is to show she is a member of the Communist Party of China. We talked with a number of them and exchanged WeChat connections.
#4: wave after wave of student groups took their photos in front of the Hengyangjie Battle Memorial, with a saying from Mao Zedong etched in the stone in his inimitable calligraphy style.
#5: ibid.
#6: we had terrible light, late in the afternoon. Here are students looking out over the battle valley. They love to carry flags of their schools and unfurl banners for photos.
#7: one of the students took a picture of me taking a picture. With the lighting, it came out a silhouette.
#8: Mao Zedong, on the left coming back to visit Hengyangjie in May, 1965.
#9. For history buffs, a short explanation of the Hengyang Memorial.
