A “punk” city of “only” 5-6 million people

So, we just arrived in Yueyang. This is a punk city of only 5- 6 million people. Which is nothing in China. I mean, this is like a fourth-tier city. We’re a couple of hundred kilometers north of Changsha. And look how nice it is. It’s clean. Look at this. Isn’t this nice? And this is a “crappy little” fourth-tier city. You can just see how beautiful it is. Just incredibly clean and organized. Very, very nice.

Clean and organized

So, here we are in Yueyang again in a taxi. I said in China, five million people. It’s a punk town. And you know, it hardly even registers. Look how nice and clean and organized it is. Big wide boulevards, flowers, trees. Everything’s green. I can see we’re heading towards downtown because there’s some taller buildings down there. But, we’re going to turn off. We’re going to a famous place called Dongting Lake.

Affordable housing by the millions

Look how nice this is. It’s just incredibly well organized. Anybody could live here. These are nice, subsidized housing apartments, 20-30 floors everywhere. There’s millions and millions and millions of these in China for low end, for people to be able to buy their first place. Of course, China has about 90% home ownership. And out of those 90%, some 60 to 70% don’t even have a loan on their houses, all paid off. So, they don’t have a payment each month, which makes life much, much, much easier.

Tree-lined streets and businesses everywhere

This is very common in China. You have trees lining all of the boulevards and lots and lots of businesses here on the right-hand side.

Blue-plated gas cars versus green-plated e-cars

Again, all these blue-plated gas cars, that’s a Buick in front of us. The smaller the town you get to, there’s fewer and fewer electric cars. That’s changing. It’s changing fast. In fact, there’s a BYD car dealership right there, which is the biggest e-car manufacturer in the world. Electric scooters that you can rent for one or two yuan.

No beggars, no homeless people

So, this is a very typical small Chinese city. Notice there’s no garbage anywhere. There’s no trash, there’s no beggars, there’s no homeless people. There’s none of that here.

Gardens and flowers everywhere

They keep the streets clean, they have gardens and flowers blooming all over the place.

Conclusion

It’s very, very pleasant being here and back in China.

Have a complaint in Yueyang? Call 12319 to get a hotline to the city government and I can promise you, they follow up. I know, because I did it several times living and working in Beijing and Shenzhen for 16 years.

Don’t trust your local government? In China, I don’t know why you wouldn’t. In any case, then call 12345 at the national level, 24/7 to talk to real person who listens.
