How China grows immune to Trump’s Tariff War 2.0
China is increasingly resorting to tit-for-tat measures, instead of World Trade Organization disputes, as it no longer relies on US trade as much as it did 20–30 years ago, Jeff J. Brown, author of The China Trilogy, tells Sputnik.
The pundit explains that Beijing’s non-Western trade is growing at double-digit rates, giving the nation more room for maneuver.
“Some [Chinese measures] are minor, like reciprocal tariffs on US goods, but others are substantial, such as limiting the export of rare earth minerals and sanctions on the US military,” Brown stressed.

Q: What leverage does China have for a harder response to US tariffs?
A: In the past, all the blockades, sanctions and tariffs that Uncle Sam has used to try to suppress China’s progress were mostly met with WTO complaints, diplomatic and global media protests. Those days are over. Beijing is now responding more and more with “tit-for-tat” measures. Some are minor, like reciprocal tariffs on US goods, but others are substantial, such as limiting the export of rare earth minerals and sanctions on the US military, which heavily depends on many hundreds of Chinese supply chains to keep its Worldwide Wehrmacht creating havoc across Planet Earth. On the international stage, Beijing is “going Mao”, being more outspoken and forthright in its criticism of Uncle Sam and exposure of Western empire.
USA’s ability to harm China’s development must be put into global perspective. In 2023, China’s total ASEAN trade was $975 billion, with the EU $847 billion, with the US $759 billion, Latin America and the Middle East $500 billion each, Africa $300 billion, Russia $240 billion and Australia $220 billion. Volumes to non-Western countries are mostly increasing at double digit rates and Western countries mostly declining. China does not need American trade like it did 20-30 years ago.
Smart people admit when what they are doing is not working and adapt. Western leaders don’t do that. They have reptile brains. They only know how to bribe, extort, sanction and color-revolution the Global Majority, a playbook that has exhausted itself since the end of World War II. Over the decades, even the smallest of victims have learned to adapt and thrive, with Cuba, Cambodia and the African Sahel countries being prime examples.
