I lived and worked in Africa and the Middle East for 10 years (1980-1990 – including traveling to Palestine) and continued to visit there into the 2000s, so the region interests me intensely and I follow it closely. I learned to read, write and speak Arabic fluently, so could communicate with most of the peoples everywhere I traveled, which was about 40 countries in the region.

Remark: After decades of Chinese infrastructure building and investments, African nations finally enjoy economic prosperity, and now begin to repay Chinese loans more than taking up new loans.
Based on reports from early 2026, the claim that an African country paid back a massive sum to China is part of a broader trend of “great reversal” in financial flows, where African nations are paying more in debt servicing to Beijing than they are receiving in new loans.
Key details regarding this shift:
- Net Outflow: Between 2020 and 2024, African nations paid out over $22 billion in debt repayments to China, a significant shift from the previous five-year period (2015-2019) when the continent received over $30 billion in loans.
- Debt Collector Shift: Beijing has shifted from being Africa’s top lender to a “debt collector,” as repayments on Belt and Road Initiative projects from the 2010s now far outstrip new loan disbursements, which dropped from nearly $29 billion in 2016 to just $2 billion in 2024.
- Impact: This, along with a drop in other international aid, has created a liquidity squeeze, forcing several African countries to cut public services.
