China Writers Eric Arnow and Jeff J. Brown share another brief email exchange: expat misfits and Chinese who have abandoned their motherland. Radio Sinoland 260401

Article

I just had a very informative conversation with a taxi driver in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province in China. It relates directly to a recent post, where fellow China Writer Eric Arnow and I exchange comments about disaffected Chinese, who have emigrated to Thailand.

Mr. Zhou is 35 years old. He was a successful landscape engineer, the ones who plan all the electricity, lighting, water, sewage, runoff, roads and trails. China builds public parks like crazy, so business was good. He married a mechanical engineer who has also retired at a very young age.

Why? Burned out. Mr. Zhou said the pressure was relentless. They had very successful careers, but were not enjoying it anymore. They traveled all over China, took great vacations and paid for a nice house. Then, they decided to cross the socio-economic Rubicon.

Since last year, he stopped working for three months to chill out, and now drives a rented taxi, while his wife is a stay-at-home housewife. He pays RMB3,000 (378 euros) per month to lease the car, but being electric, he can go 280km for only 26 yuan (3.27 euros), does not pay for maintenance, so does alright. With no mortgage, they can live on just enough.

I asked about kids and his wife is unsure about having any right now. Cost is a factor and they are enjoying their laid-back, simplified life. Since all Chinese have universal health care, his taxi income supports their current minimal lifestyle.

This is not just a Chinese issue, but is generational instead. Evelyne and I know a number of people in France and USA, in the same age bracket, who are getting paid leave for depression, taking anti-depressives as a matter of course and eschewing being mothers and fathers. Our family doctor in Taiwan says a well-known anti-depressive drug is the most popular medication on the island. Friends on the Mainland say young Chinese graduates are following suit.

Evelyne’s and my generation, growing up in the 50s-70s faced adversity too. It was a tumultuous and contentious era. There were illegal drugs and lots of protests. Still, the paradigm of success was to persevere and keep going. “Tuning in and dropping out” was an act of rebellion, yet it seems to be the new normal today.

Is the difference chemical? Is the disparity due to the widespread use of anti-anxiety and anti-depressant drugs?

We know these pills are proven to cause detachment and reduced libido. Are these drugs another arrow in the Talmud-Tanakh’s global depopulation quiver?

Another generational sea change is social media saturating daily lives, with the likes of TikTok in capitalist countries and Douyin in communist-socialist China. Each has a number of competitors vying for the human race’s brain synapses.

Is their mind-numbing vacuousness causing soul-sucking apathy and boredom? Is today’s anti-intellectual social media part of a bigger plan for Chinese and Judeo-elites to control their respective humanities?

Is this the dystopian Brave New World that depopulationist Aldous Huxley wrote so glowingly about in 1932?

Food for thought.
