My comments
When we first moved to China in 1990-1997, I did not take China’s fascinating calendars very seriously. The Western civil calendar dominated daily life and I didn’t give it much thought. When we came back for another nine years, 2010-2019, I started catching on about how important the agricultural and lunar calendars are in Chinese life – even in the big cities like Beijing and Shenzhen.
The first post in the library below was originally written in 2014 and has been continually updated since then. It is a veritable magnum opus on all things Chinese calendars and essential as the first place to start.
Living on Taiwan Island since 2025 really piqued my interest even more, since Daoism is so popular here. I began to pay more attention to our annual, Daoist, tear-a-page-a-day calendar, which is covered in the second article below. It is truly mind-boggling!
This year of the Fire Horse 2026, I am starting to write articles about each of the 24 seasonal agricultural points, occurring every two weeks throughout the year. I hope to complete all of them in the coming months, as time permits. I will also write articles about key dates in the lunar and civil calendars. Chinese take celebration days for mothers, fathers, museums, tourism, trees, etc. very seriously. As I write them, they will be put in the library list below according to their place in the annual calendar.
China’s two calendars are deeply embedded in the people’s psyche, having been used for 5,000 years. It took a while, but now I realize just how important they are on a day-to-day basis. These calendars really do course through their veins. To really understand how the Chinese tick, it is essential to at least have a basic understanding of their calendars. Another benefit is when an agricultural, lunar or civil point arrives and you are able to recognize that fact, Chinese people are deeply appreciative of your knowledge, respect and admire you for it.
Have fun and keep coming back, as this library will continue to expand! Jeff
