My comments

We do not go to Walmart very often, but we do shop a lot at Carrefour, which is French, and Costco, which is American, along with Walmart.

Not only are they maintaining a huge presence in China, but three German chains, Metro, Lidl and Aldi all have a presence here.

You don’t even have to ask if they’re making money. You just go to one of their stores and see they’re packed with people. Costco on the weekends is like being in front of the stage of big rock concert. You can barely move.

They’re just packed with customers, they’re well run, they’re well stocked with local and imported merchandise. We love the real French cheeses, fresh cream and butter, so Evelyne can make great homemade meals and tasty Franco-deserts.They all have thousands of items from around the world and they wouldn’t be offering them if the Chinese weren’t buying. Our local Carrefour has a big poster showing the flags of countries and the number of items from each: Japan, Korea, France, Italy, USA, Australia, New Zealand, etc. We love it and so do the Chinese!

The staff in all of them is outstanding and helpful. These foreign businesses are making money hand over fist in the China market. So it’s not just Walmart, it’s all of the global chains that are popular around the world.

I could go on and on about all the imported products we find in retail stores all over China. All the big brand names are here, from high-end to the mundane. For companies like McDonald’s, KFC, Pizza Hut, Mercedes Benz, BMW, Audi, Apple, Sony, Samsung, FexEx, UPS, United Airways, Air France and thousands of more, the China market helps keeps them not just afloat, but profitable. National competition in every sector is intense, but they are still bringing billions back home every year.

We see it every day living and working here.

Thanks to my good friend and comrade, China Writer Wei Ling Chua (https://www.amazon.com/stores/Wei-Ling-Chua/author/B00G3SWQZ0) for finding this report and making some great comments!

When US started a Trade War, the low quality brainless leadership often ignored the reality that tens of thousands of US companies are making  hundreds of billions of dollars each year inside the Chinese consumer market alone!

The reasons China with a GDP smaller than US yet in reality the biggest trading partner in the world (with over 140 countries) is because the Chinese economy is a real economy that offer values for money goods and services (search under PPP by country to know that In 2025, China, the United States, and India are the world’s largest economies by GDP (PPP), with China leading at approximately $39–40 trillion: https://share.google/aimode/dzcKfXRnW8oAUrpTO ). The reality is that the Chinese statistics are far more honest and conservative than the US, the US economy is very much build on Bullshitting fueled by debts (both national and domestic level), corruption activities, and corporate greed (with inflated prices and profits at the expense of the well being of the average Americans wallets and saving).

Below is just an example of huge profit made by an US retail giant in China, the company not only enjoying a strong sales surge of 21.8% but also significantly outperforming its global average. That reflect the reality that the (lower per capital income) Chinese domestic consumer’s buying power is significantly stronger than the US,  it’s also reflect the reality that the Chinese market and government are more inclusive and fairer to foreign companies doing business in China than US treatment of Chinese companies in US.

(Note also that: When Chinese telecommunications company’s Huawei become more technologically advanced than the US, US begun to ban, sanction and attack Huawei operations not only inside US but globally, while China still allow the four biggest US telecommunication companies to continue their operation and money making activities inside China:  https://share.google/aimode/NI4rep9oYyT767IGa )

Below is the AI summary of Walmart business in China:

https://share.google/aimode/C5VZIB9u1HFCLPliu

Walmart’s business in China is significantly outperforming its global average, with Q3 FY2026 net sales surging 21.8% to \(\$6.1\) billion, far exceeding the company’s global growth, driven by rapid Sam’s Club expansion and strong e-commerce, which accounts for over half of total sales.

Key Performance Highlights (As of late 2025/early 2026):

  • Rapid Growth:In Q3 FY2026, Walmart China’s net sales rose \(21.8\%\), while comparable sales grew \(13.8\%\), consistently outperforming global growth.
  • E-commerce Dominance:E-commerce sales increased \(32\%\), accounting for more than half of Walmart China’s total sales.
  • Sam’s Club Expansion:Sam’s Club is the primary growth driver, with over 10 million members in China by the end of 2025 and 10 new stores opened in 2025, reaching 63 stores, with plans for further expansion to 73 in 2026.
  • Key Drivers:Success is attributed to high-quality fresh food, private-label products, and an efficient omnichannel model.

Comparison to Global & Industry Averages:

  • Global vs. China:While Walmart’s global revenue grew by 6% in Q3 2025, the China market saw a much higher \(21.8\%\) increase.
  • Market Position:Walmart China grew significantly faster than the Chinese supermarket industry average of \(4.4\%\) in the first three quarters of 2025. [1, 2]

Strategic Focus:

  • Membership Model:Focusing on urban middle-income consumers through high-repeat-purchase warehouse formats.
  • Private Labels:Upgrading, and rebranding products (e.g., Marketside) to improve gross margins.
  • Community Stores:Expanding smaller, community-focused stores for higher convenience.
