My comments
I have a WeChat forum in China with quite a mix of people from around the world, including a good number of Chinese.
One of them uses the pen name Swordsman and he mentions that he wrote a book. I asked him where we could buy it and he did not get back to me. He has some very pithy comments about the human condition, which I will be publishing more of in the future. He especially had a wonderful, very gentlemanly conversation with fellow China Writer member T.P. Wilkinson, which I will be getting out here in the next couple of weeks.
This thread that he wrote below is about East vs. West, communism-socialism vs. Judeo-imperialism-capitalism. It just goes to show you how incredibly thoughtful, philosophical and rational Chinese people can be. I don’t fully agree with everything he says, but it is a masterful essay.
If you not Chinese, buckle up, because Swordsman pulls no punches!
I translated it into English and kept the original Chinese, for those who read Mandarin, since reverse translations are far from perfect.
If you’d like to join my WeChat forum, download WeChat on your phone or computer, then connect with me using the QR code below and I’ll add you. Like the China Writers’ Group, my knowledge and horizons have expanded greatly as a result of participating. Most of the conversations are in English, but the great thing about WeChat is it will translate any text post into your phone’s/PC’s system language for free, with just the click of a button!
Two points before you start. The 30/70 reference is what Deng Xiaoping produced after Mao Zedong’s death, saying he was 30% wrong and 70% right. Ironically, Deng took this ratio straight from Mao, who always said that if a Party member was 30% wrong and 70% correct, then that would be acceptable.
The Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution are being thoroughly reassessed by many Chinese, who think that saying Mao being 30% wrong is just plain wrong, and that Mao‘s mistakes were much less than that. In fact, it is Xi Jinping who is gently pushing the debate in this direction and I think he is right. School textbooks have also been revamped to show a much less critical look at the Founding Father of People’s Republic of China. To be honest, there is a real Mao revival going on across China, which is a good thing. No Mao Zedong, no free, independent and liberated China!
Secondly, the recent Chinese movie, “The Prisoner” has been hugely controversial and was pulled from the theaters, although I think it can still be watched online. It is about an abused wife who murders her husband, with the thrust being that it was justifiable. The vast majority of Chinese did not like it at all and thought that her punishment did not fit the crime. Many Chinese say it is Judeo-inspired, Woke trash and want nothing to do with it.

In my WeChat forum: (Chinese) Swordsman discusses East vs. West
On East v West
First, I want to establish a “rational and objective” stance (to avoid making some group members feel physically uncomfortable after reading the following): No one is perfect, therefore, nothing created by humankind, including political systems, is flawless.
But without comparison, there is no harm. Increasingly, facts prove that when we remove all filters and propaganda that disregards facts, China surpasses or is surpassing the leader of the “free world,” the United States, in almost all areas (note the emphasis on “almost,” not “all/completely”), which is the best irrefutable proof of the superiority of its system. Renowned national and international research institutions and government think tanks, including those in Australia, Sweden, the Netherlands, and even the United States, have published their own assessment reports, claiming China’s technological lead and industry dominance over the United States. This is no longer an isolated phenomenon but a general state. Previously, when the United States/the West evaluated the advancement of a certain field or phenomenon in China, they often used the phrase “in spite of the Chinese government”; but recently, more and more reports are rewriting it as “because of the Chinese government.” This is not merely a confirmation of a state, but a decisive condition in the development process that cannot be ignored.
Logically, important events occurring “because of the Chinese government,” especially those concerning the overall planning of national political and economic development and the defense and guidance of social order and good customs, are fundamentally correct facts. Otherwise, China’s comprehensive rejuvenation (often referred to as “rise” in the Western context) would not have occurred.
In view of this, it is necessary to review the history of the past forty-odd years since the reform and opening up, and to see the many landmark events and the turning points they represent. It can be said that the Communist Party’s leadership and adherence to the socialist path remain unchanged in the constitution, but there have been significant technical adjustments in the implementation of how the socialist path is actually followed. The effects are obvious.
However, these “technical adjustments,” often deliberately misinterpreted or even imagined (wishful thinking) by Western media as shifts in political choices and cultural traditions. This is the shortsightedness and limitation resulting from their shallow historical understanding.
Previously, given the vast social and material disparities, China’s public intellectual class (in a sense, the “elite class”) was frightened by the reality and consciously or unconsciously became propagandists of Western ideology. Ordinary Chinese people have consistently suffered from information asymmetry, becoming passive recipients of ideological indoctrination.
This widespread and subtle social indoctrination is primarily achieved through mass media using selective news reporting and artistic works with explicit Western narrative logic.
The question we must ask is: Does no one in the CPC leadership been able to see these problems from a historical perspective? The answer is, of course, no. At least each generation of top leadership has been clear about it. But without a doubt, the teachers are the benchmark among them, the “instigators.”
From the Yan’an Rectification Movement to the launch of the Cultural Revolution, although they occurred at different historical stages, they are logically connected historically. If the leader hadn’t mobilized the Cultural Revolution, his historical contribution to the Chinese Revolution would have been incomplete and flawed. The establishment of the new China could only be considered a physical overthrow of the “three great mountains” (imperialism, feudalism, and bureaucratic capitalism), and could easily have led back to the historical cycle of dynastic change.
The Cultural Revolution truly liberated the Chinese people from the feudal ideological constraints that had bound them for thousands of years. It laid an irreversible foundation for physical liberation.
This spiritual liberation will naturally be felt differently by different people. As the saying goes, “The dust of history falling on an individual is the final judgment of fate.” But whether we, as descendants, can transcend “survivorship bias” and objectively understand it is the two-dimensional yardstick of emotional and intellectual intelligence used to judge whether we possess a historical perspective and broad-mindedness. The “30/70 split” approach to the leader was an emotional reassurance to those impacted by the Cultural Revolution, and at that historical stage, it was in line with “intelligence.” But history never ends (Fukuyama is a prime example of turning hymns into fanatical converts), it will continue until the end of humanity.
Therefore, I predict that in the near future (this timeline can be estimated and predicted), this “30/70 split” will be re-discussed and reassessed. Because at that time, “emotional intelligence” will gradually shed “emotional wounds,” ultimately allowing “intellectual intelligence” to return to the dominant position of rationality. The historical positioning of teachers will not only be about the perfection of their character, but also the ultimate interpretation of a revolutionary’s dedication to the cause until death.
In conclusion, I must return to my previous critique of the Chinese elite: those who consider themselves elites, or those who don’t say it but secretly think so, if they cannot break free from the constraints of Western ideology, if they cannot see the factual crushing of Western civilization by Chinese civilization (long vs. short, complete vs. fragmented, the organic and vibrant of conservatism vs. the dilution and discontinuity of expansion), cannot actually be considered a highly intelligent group. If you view Western ideology as a fan-driven idol group, and you are a fan, then you are a brain-dead person who has lost their sense of self and awareness, not a true elite.
The main problem with the controversial movie, *The Prisoner* isn’t whether it’s illegal, but its stupidity and absurdity.
If the intention is wrong, the proposition is wrong; if the proposition is wrong, the means are wrong; if the means are wrong, the result is wrong. But why is the intention wrong? It’s the problem I mentioned earlier.
The people who made this movie actually understand neither the West nor China.
