Dr. Kishore Mabubani’s speech in front of what looks like an Anglo-Saxon group is very good.
Nonetheless, he makes several mistakes, which is understandable, because it is hard to overcome all of the brainwashing and the biases that we have in the Judeo-West and its Big Lie Propaganda Machine.
First, Dr. Mabubani said that China was not trying to be communist.
That’s absolutely false. It has been said many times by Baba Beijing that the goal of the Chinese people is:
By 2049, to be the richest, most powerful, most militarily unassailable, most technologically advanced country in the world, and that the people will be fabulously prosperous, happy, healthy and safe.
This is a matter of public record.
At that point in 2049, being in that unassailable commanding vantage point of absolute wealth, military and technological power, the Chinese will begin to transition into Maoist communism, obviously adapted to 100 years of change.
Understand that China is already communist, but it still has a layer at the top of capitalist consumerism and that’s what they probably want to work on.
In my second book of The China Trilogy, China Rising, the very first chapter, I juxtaposed a picture of a Shang Dynasty emperor 1,750 years ago with Karl Marx, the founder of modern, political and economic Marxism/communism – explaining that the Chinese have been communists for thousands of years. And that’s absolutely true. The whole society is based on socio-cultural communism.
All that Marx did was made it political, geopolitical and related it to the Industrial Revolution, although China had numerous productivity revolutions over the millennia. Yet, economically, culturally and socially, China has been communist for many millennia.
Another point that Dr. Mabubani fudged was about Chinese democracy. He talked about traditional Chinese culture. Nonetheless, what he didn’t mention is that the Chinese have had real people-powered, from-the-bottom-to-the-top citizens’ democracy going back 3,000 years.

Then finally, the last point is that Dr. Mabubani has the same weakness as 99% of other foreigners. That being, China only became developed after Deng Xiaoping, which is absolutely, utterly, ridiculously false.

Never has one person done so much, for so many people in such a short period of time.
At great risk to the Chinese Revolution, Deng created a cutthroat, criminal, corrupt, nepotistic, thieving, lying capitalist jungle with a complete lack of concern for the environment, public safety, etc. Everyone from ministries to open markets was lying, cheating, stealing and backstabbing. No one could trust anyone.
I know, because my wife, two children and I lived, worked and traveled all over China, 1990-1997.
Yes, it produced a lot of goods, expanded, updated expand Mao’s hugely successful industrial base, and transformed Chinese society into a consumerism, but it came at a very heavy socio-cultural, environmental price.
As I have said countless times, Deng Xiaoping could not have gotten out of his armchair without the massive, economic, social, infrastructural, technological, scientific and innovative Mao Zedong Era.
It would have never happened.
Other than that, Doctor Mabubani’s understanding of China’s role in global history, going back millennia, especially the 19th and 20th centuries is excellent. He shoves the true story in the faces of this White-Anglo audience, which is commendable. He also nails it that China is not going to be displaced or dislodged by Western hegemony.
