Remark: I think the PLA no longer thinks that the American military is a peer competitor ‼️so, China 2026 military budget only increase by 7%, smaller increment than 2024, 2025 budget of 7.2% increment.
However, the Chinese GDP is still growing about 5% each year, so, Chinese military budget per GDP ratio actually came down: Only 1.3% of GDP compared to 1.5% in 2025 budget.
(This is in sharp contrast to warmonger Trump’s record-breaking military budget of $1 Trillion in 2025 and $1.5 trillions in 2026 ‼️)
Based on reports from the annual Chinese parliamentary meetings in March 2026, China has announced a 7% increase in its defense budget for 2026, reaching approximately 1.91 trillion yuan ($277 billion).
Regarding the percentage of GDP and comparison to 2025, here are the key findings based on official draft reports:
- 2026 Budget vs. GDP: The 2026 defense budget is projected to be around 1.3% to 1.36% of GDP.
- Comparison to 2025: While the 7% increase represents the 11th consecutive year of single-digit growth (lower than the 7.2% increases in 2024 and 2025), official reports indicate that China has continued to keep its defense spending below 1.5% of GDP for many years.
- Context: The 2026 increase (7%) is slightly lower than the 7.2% growth seen in 2025, but it still outpaces the projected economic growth target of 4.5% to 5% for 2026.
Therefore, while the growth rate slowed (7% vs 7.2% in 2025), the total budgeted amount increased, but remained below 1.5% of GDP!
