Above: this clip is as fake as a three-dollar bill, yet so real. How to know?
Exhibit A
In our China Writers’ Group, we exchange a lot of information, videos, clips, articles, hyperlinks, references, books, you name it. We do a lot of exchanging. My good friend and comrade, Wei Ling Chua, sent me a short clip of Xi Jinping giving a speech or it was an extract of a speech that he gave. I will read it to you right now and this is what the extract says. Of course, I have the video clip for you to see as well, above,
“China supports global peace and sovereignty, but if any country incites and threatens in the name of its own interests, we will never stand idly by.
Whether it is the UK, America, or any other country, if it poses a threat to China or our allies, we will respond firmly and decisively.
Those who watch the flames of war, it will pay for itself (better translated as, they will reap what they have sown).
The world must remember China is unafraid of pressure and threats.
If someone attempts to harm China or our partner countries, we will take decisive action without hesitation.
China doesn’t want war, but if war is imposed on us, we will never back down”.
Wow! When I heard it, I thought, That doesn’t sound like Xi Jinping and it doesn’t sound like any Chinese leader, diplomat or representative. The Chinese very rarely name names. Instead, they’ll say some countries. They’ll say, some Western countries, certain leaders, without pinpointing names of people or places.
Thus, I thanked Chua for sending me the video, commenting I didn’t know he said that. I went back and looked at the video. For just like a split second, I could see that it was the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia in October 2024. I emailed back telling Chua this. He asked if I could find a transcript of Xi’s BRICS 2024 speech, commenting, Is that AI generated? So, I found the speech. Here is the link,
https://english.www.gov.cn/news/202410/24/content_WS67196533c6d0868f4e8ec3b9.html
The whole truth and nothing but the truth?
In Xi’s real speech, none of the following words are found: threat, allies, UK, USA, incite. It’s a typical boilerplate Chinese international relations speech full of optimism. Yet, the clip is so unimaginably real, it’s like magic. AI took Xi’s voice and made him speak the text the creator wanted, mouthing the words perfectly. It’s really unbelievable.
The most important thing is that it’s extremely scary, because what can we believe anymore? What’s real? What’s fake? This has been a problem going back to at least World War One and especially starting with World War Two and the Korean War. Experts doctored and re-exposed photos. They did unbelievable work for propaganda purposes. Another classic fake news trick is to use other media and claim its for the creator’s purpose. Like taking a photo from a Burmese riot in 1972 and saying it is Chinese police beating up and shooting its citizens in 1989.
Now with AI, this creation of simulacrum is so good that you can’t trust anything anymore. TikTok has a warning down at the bottom of its clips that can be added. It states, Creator’s prompt: Content produced by AI technology. Please discern fiction with caution. However, to keep from getting censored or having their accounts blocked, creators are putting this notice at the bottom of every clip they do, whether it’s reality-based or not, which dilutes what it’s supposed to do, making it largely irrelevant. Here is an example I got from my WeChat Radio Sinoland forum,
TikTok creators are overusing the “Creator’s prompt”, rendering it useless.
Caveat emptor
This is all extremely troubling. You have to really be on your toes. You cannot take everything that you hear and read as reliable, especially audio-visual, because they can spin the most life-like fake content.
For example, a creator can command AI to generate photos of the Natanz Civil Nuclear Center in Iran, after it has been hit with Jewish State missiles. AI goes through billions of maps, files, images, videos and articles to come up with the fake image, perfectly rendered and amazingly realistic. They can even do videos. Last week, I saw a drone video of Haifa Port in the Jewish state, after it had been bombed by Iran and boy, I tell you, I looked at it and I said to myself, it can’t be that leveled to the ground. That’s got to be AI.
This is such a problem that China is passing a law that the creator has to add a This post contains AI notification on all social media, even if it only has one second of AI or one tricked pixel.
Therefore, now you know it’s caveat emptor, buyer beware, or in this case, viewer/reader beware. It’s all very interesting and even more frightening.
It’s especially valid with what Mad Max Uncle Slaughter is doing and its huge hard-on to go to war with Iran. Some people would really like to hear Xi Jinping say what is in the fake clip discussed above. Nevertheless, the Chinese are way too Confucian-Daoist-Buddhist to be so point blank in conducting their diplomacy and international relations.
Thank you.
