My comments

The Mandarin name for this two-week period of the Chinese agricultural calendar literally means “Little Fill” (小满 = Xiǎomǎn), to recognize that planted cereals, especially rice, are starting to fill in their grain heads. After two weeks, we arrive to “Grain in Ear” (芒种 =  Mángzhòng), meaning the grain heads are plumping out and two weeks later is the summer solstice, known all over the world. This calendric cadence has been cycling for 5,000 Chinese years!

Below is the page from our Daoist calendar

In the Calendar Library referenced below, read “ADVENTURES IN ASIA WITH LADYB, LAOLAO AND GONGGONG- Story #25”, which explains the bottom half. Truly fascinating!

Here is the explanation for the top half,

Notice the time of 08:37. This is the moment when the Sun crosses 90 degrees on its annual journey across our sky – Beijing time, of course! For astronomers, it equals six hours of Right Ascension.

The Vertical Sentences

These two sentences form a couplet expressing a wish for academic and career success, specifically referring to the ancient Imperial Civil Service Examinations.
1. Right Side Sentence:
  • Chinese: 首登龙虎榜上名
  • Pinyin: Shǒu dēng lóng hǔ bǎng shàng míng
  • Translation: “To be the first to have one’s name ascend the Dragon and Tiger List.”
    • Note: The “Dragon and Tiger List” (龙虎榜) refers to the list of successful candidates in the highest level of the imperial examinations. Being at the top of this list was the ultimate achievement for a scholar.
2. Left Side Sentence:
  • Chinese: 三篇文章一名仕
  • Pinyin: Sān piān wén zhāng yī míng shì
  • Translation: “With three essays, one becomes a famous official.”
    • Note: This implies that through literary talent (writing the required essays for the exam), one secures a prestigious career as a government official (仕).
In sum, late May is approaching the end of the academic year and the big Gaokao test is taken by millions of high school graduates, this year, 7-10 June. If passed, they can get placed in a university. I have two articles below about China’s Gaokao.
Thus, in 2026, the Chinese effortlessly refer to their ancient history going back many millennia. Not so much in the Judeo-West, that’s for sure! Westerners have been deracinated by Talmud-Tanakh Weimarization, sad to say, and it shows in everyday life.

Explanation of the Painting

The Scene: The central illustration depicts a woman in traditional clothing sitting in a small boat (a sampan) on a river. She appears to be fixing her hair with one hand, maybe with a mirror on her lap.
Symbolism and Context:
  • Solar Term (Xiao Man): The large characters 小满 (Xiǎo Mǎn) indicate the solar term “Grain Buds,” which occurs around May 20–22. This is the time when the seeds of summer crops (like rice and wheat) begin to plump up but are not yet fully ripe.
  • The Plants: The tall, grassy plants on the bank to the left represent the grain or reeds associated with this time of year (Grain Buds).
  • The Mood: The image is a pastoral, peaceful scene typical of traditional Chinese “tear-off” calendars (黄历 = huángli = yellow calendar = almamac). While the text speaks of high ambition (exams and office), the image offers a counter-balance of leisure and natural beauty. It may also subtly allude to a scholar’s wife waiting by the river, or simply serve as an auspicious image of a “beauty on the water” to bring good fortune.

From the CGTN article referenced below,

Xiaoman, or “Grain Buds,” marks the early stages of crop maturation around May 20 each year. This solar term ushers in the upcoming harvest season and signals shifts in both agricultural practices and daily life. During Xiaoman, attention to climatic changes is vital for health preservation and disease prevention, facilitating a smooth transition into summer.

The philosophy of “fullness without excess” embodied in Xiaoman advocates balance and moderation. This principle reflects a deep respect for nature’s cycles and rhythms.

Xiaoman illustrates the Eastern wisdom of observing agricultural seasons and phenology, promoting sustainable practices aligned with the environment. It reminds us of the profound connection between human life and nature, encouraging a lifestyle that ensures both agricultural sustainability and holistic well-being.

For just one day of 365 in the annual calendar, the Chinese are very deep and reflective thinkers, especially encompassing Daoism, Confucism and Buddhism. See my post, “Long Slow Arc…” below for a great explanation.

For all the details about what to eat, drink, do and not do during Grain Fill, check out the second reference below, “Teasoul”.

Conclusion

Talmud-Tanakh West simply cannot compare to Sinoland’s millennial civilization, going back 5,000 years. A few people still use almanacs and in Judeo-USA, where it reached its pinnacle in the early 19th century, with Benjamin Franklin’s “Poor Richard’s Almanac”. Other than an occasional, pithy Franklin aphorism here and there, it has all atrophied in Judeo-West.
